Class at a Glance:
This is a combination hunter (firearm) and bowhunter classroom course for students ages 9 and older. Students must attend all class sessions and pass an exam to be certified in both hunter (firearm) and bowhunter education. Live fire is not a requirement to receive a Hunter-Ed Certificate, however, this course will have an optional live fire session. ***
This course has a pre-study requirement. Students registered for this course will need to pick up a student manual to review and complete the worksheets in the back of the manual before the first class session. Student manuals are available at either the IDFG Panhandle Region Office, 2885 W Kathleen Avenue, Coeur d’Alene, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, or at the Center Target Sports, 3295 E Mullan Ave, Post Falls. Student manuals can also be mailed by contacting the Hunter Education Coordinator at (208) 770-3762, but please allow time for mail delivery.
Saturday and Sunday sessions will have a 30-minute break for lunch. Students should bring a bag of lunch (there is no microwave available).
Forms for students under age 18 will need to be completed by a parent at the first class session.
***There will be range time during the morning of the last day—free firearm rentals when you purchase the ammo.
Course Content
This course will provide instruction in the areas of:
-Firearm and Bow handling and safety
-Hunting/Bowhunting law and ethics
-Responsibilities towards landowners
-Hunting/bowhunting skills including methods of shot placement, recovery techniques, game care, survival skills, blood trailing, tree stand safety, and first aid;
-Responsibilities towards landowners
-Wildlife identification
-Management and conservation
Age Requirements
Recommended for students ages 9 to adult.
A parent must check in students under age 18.
Hunter Education Certification Cards
Students are certified in both hunter and bowhunter education. Hunter & Bowhunter Combination Certification cards will be awarded to students upon successful completion of the course, which includes attending all class sessions, passing the field exercises, and a written test.
Who needs Hunter Education?
If you were born on or after January 1, 1975, you must complete a hunter education course to purchase a hunting license OR show proof of a previously held license in Idaho or another state.
Who needs Bowhunter Education?
To buy an archery permit, all bowhunters must possess a valid hunting license and show proof they have completed an approved bowhunter education course OR show evidence of having been licensed for an archer-only hunt in Idaho or another state or complete an affidavit to that effect.
